Wood wool fire starters are effective and easy to make. Here's a simple method to create your own wood wool fire starters:
Materials:
1. Wood wool (also known as excelsior or wood shavings)
2. Wax (paraffin wax or old candles)
3. Muffin cups or paper cupcake liners
4. Muffin tin or similar mold
Instructions:
1. Prepare the Work Area:
Set up a clean and safe work area. Cover surfaces with newspaper or an old cloth to catch any wax drips.
2. Melt the Wax:
If you're using paraffin wax or old candles, melt it in a double boiler or a heat-safe container over low heat.
Be cautious as wax is flammable, and never leave it unattended while melting.
3. Prepare the Muffin Cups:
Place the muffin cups or paper cupcake liners in the muffin tin. This will serve as molds for your fire starters.
4. Add Wood Wool:
Fill each muffin cup with a generous amount of wood wool. Pack it down slightly to ensure it holds together.
5. Pour Wax:
Carefully pour the melted wax over the wood wool in each cup. Ensure that the wood wool is thoroughly saturated with wax.
The wax will act as a fuel when you use the fire starter.
6. Cool and Solidify:
Allow the wax and wood wool mixture to cool and solidify. This may take a couple of hours. Once the fire starters are firm,
you can remove them from the muffin cups.
7. Store:
Store the wood wool fire starters in a cool, dry place. Keep them away from direct sunlight and moisture.
8. Use:
To use the fire starter, simply place it under your kindling when starting a fire. The wood wool will catch fire easily,
and the wax will help sustain the flame, making it an effective fire starter.
Remember to exercise caution when working with hot wax, and follow safety guidelines to prevent accidents.
